In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly hot topic in the tech industry. ChatGPT, a conversational AI, is one of the latest innovations that has stunned the world with its ability to carry out an intelligent conversation with humans. In this article, we’ll explore the history and development of ChatGPT, as well as the impact it has had on the world.

The History of Conversational AI
AI research has been around for almost 80 years, and the concept of conversational AI has always been a goal. However, it was widely believed that achieving true conversational AI was the most difficult challenge for AI researchers. This is because our natural language is not a precise language – it is full of nuances and completely context-bound. Conversational AI needs to understand these nuances to be able to carry out intelligent conversations.
The Shocking Arrival of ChatGPT
When ChatGPT was first introduced, it was able to carry on conversations better than humans in some topics. This amazed, excited, and scared people all around the world. But how did AI scientists manage to crack the code?
The Science Behind ChatGPT
The only animal capable of processing natural languages at scale is human beings. To create ChatGPT, scientists modelled how our brain works and simulated it as a computer program. This program needs to be reactionary because it doesn’t know what conversation it will be thrown into. It reacts to initiating input texts and outputs generated responses.

Initially, AI researchers achieved success in image recognition. But when it came to other tasks, they failed miserably. To overcome this challenge, they developed more complex types of neural network patterns. They began with unsupervised learning, where ChatGPT was given incredible amounts of text data from the internet up to the year 2021, which took about a year. Then, they moved on to supervised learning, where ChatGPT was guided by human judges for about 6 months.

ChatGPT: Understanding the Context and Generating Response
ChatGPT is made up of two main parts: understanding the context of the input chat by human, and generating a reactionary answer back to the human. The left side of the diagram represents understanding the context, and the right side represents generating a response.
The Current State of ChatGPT
Once the neural network is built, it serves customers for a period of time until a new version is released. In between version releases, the neural network is fixed. Currently, ChatGPT is still undergoing development to make it even more efficient and user-friendly.

ChatGPT vs. Humans
Humans need to spend about 25 years to have a fully developed brain with university degrees. Neurons in the human brain are always changing their connections and activations every second we are alive. They are completely autonomous and super energy-efficient.
On the other hand, ChatGPT takes 1.5 years to be trained and released. ChatGPT does not change its neural network once built, though researchers are working to make it less rigid. It also requires massive amounts of GPU and electricity power to train.
ChatGPT is a remarkable achievement in AI technology. Its ability to carry on intelligent conversations with humans has shocked the world. The journey of developing ChatGPT has been a long and challenging one, but its impact on the world is undeniable. As AI technology continues to evolve, we can only imagine what the future holds for ChatGPT and other similar innovations.
